Bidspirit auction | Antique mosaic panel with deer

Antique mosaic panel with deer and vine decoration, Late Roman or Early Christian period, 4th - 6th century - Polychrome natural stone tesserae. Decorative fragment organized around a central circular medallion depicting a stylized deer, rendered in ochre, brown, and gray tones, its elegant silhouette set against a light background. A sinuous vine stem bearing bunches of grapes and leaves winds around the animal, executed with a keen sense of rhythm and composition. The compact arrangement of the regularly sized tesserae reveals a technical mastery characteristic of Late Antique workshops, while the animal and plant iconography alludes to themes of fertility, abundance, and renewal, common in domestic and religious decorations of the Mediterranean region. Wear, restorations, and minor losses contribute to the authenticity of the piece, now presented in a modern marble frame that ensures its conservation and enhancement. 85 x 72 cm.
