Bust of Shiva, Cham School, 9th - 12th Century - Stoneware sculpture. Dimensions not indicated. Architectural fragment preserving the bust of Shiva, adorned with a tall, conical chignon of marked verticality, a distinctive element of Cham iconography. The face displays serene and balanced features, with almond-shaped eyes barely suggested beneath heavy eyelids, a straight, robustly modeled nose, and softly curved, fleshy lips that lend an introspective and sacred expression. The volumetric simplification and the refinement of lines reflect the ritual aesthetic characteristic of the sanctuaries of My Son and Tra Kieu, key centers of Cham culture in Vietnam. The compact treatment of the torso and the geometrization of the planes reinforce the monumentality of the fragment, originally conceived as part of a devotional architectural program. The surface, eroded by time, retains the characteristic granular texture of the local sandstone, whose direct carving demonstrates a confident and synthetic technique. This piece belongs to the Hindu sculptural tradition of Southeast Asia between the 9th and 12th centuries, a period of intense artistic production linked to the cult of Shiva, where formal stylization and frontality underscore the transcendent and symbolic nature of the deity. Formerly part of a French collection since 1960.
