Agnus Dei. Spanish School. 18th Century - Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 167 x 78 cm. *Agnus Dei*, a devotional composition depicting the mystical lamb lying on the sacrificial altar, with a radiant halo and triumphal banner. The restrained treatment of the anatomy and the dramatic lighting create an effect of profound spirituality. The inscription on the reverse, ”Melodio”, could allude to a devotional setting or a conventual origin. The work is in keeping with the Baroque tradition of the Counter-Reformation, where the imagery of the *Agnus Dei* symbolized Christian redemption, a work continued in reproductions and copies throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
