Exceptional 15th-century Belgian Late Gothic Group in oak - An important sculptural group in the round, carved from wood, probably oak, depicting a Lamentation over Christ: the lifeless body of Christ is supported by the Virgin Mary and surrounded by several bearded male figures, identifiable as Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, and the apostles, in a dense and profoundly expressive composition. Christ appears with a restrained yet moving anatomical modeling, his head bowed and his features gaunt. The secondary figures display a remarkable psychological range, perceptible in their downcast gazes, restrained gestures, and individualized facial features. The ample, angular drapery is carved into the broken folds characteristic of the late Gothic period, in transition to the Renaissance. The hollowed-out reverse and the presence of an old mounting system suggest a liturgical or devotional function, probably intended for an altarpiece, a side chapel, or a piece of church furniture. Very beautiful warm brown antique patina, wear, shrinkage cracks, old restorations, and minor losses consistent with age, without affecting the legibility or the overall emotional impact.
