Jan Josef Horemans the Elder (Antwerp, 1682 - 1752) - Important Flemish Interior Scene of the 17th Century - Oil on canvas, signed lower right corner. Dimensions: 65 x 69 cm; 115 x 100 cm with frame. Flemish painter. He trained with the sculptor Michiel van der Voorti and later with the Dutch painter Jan van Pee. He worked primarily in Antwerp, becoming a member of its Painters' Guild in 1706. His work fits perfectly within the city's pictorial tradition and the Flemish school itself. Horemans specialized in painting numerous small-format, anecdotal genre scenes, depictions of contemporary daily life. These works are undoubtedly linked to the development of this genre in the 17th century, of which Horemans was merely a continuator, without any particular creative aspirations, due to the still-strong demand. In fact, his works fetched high prices on the market. The painting in the Prado Museum, Schoolmaster, is a good example. It is worth noting that his son Jan Josef Horemans II followed in his father's footsteps, painting genre scenes and still lifes, which are sometimes confused with his father's, thus cultivating, in the middle of the 18th century, genres that have their roots in the 17th.
