Exceptional Makonde Mask from Tanzania - African Art - Early 20th century, with natural hair. 22 x 19 x 26 cm. Located in southern Tanzania and northern Mozambique, they number approximately 1,500,000 people. They are well known for the high quality of their sculpture, primarily the Lipiko (masks) for the Mapiko (mask dance). Their spirituality is based on the Shetanis, a term derived from the Muslim word shetan (Satan). Although they are not actually demons, they are spirits that dwell in nature and influence human life, both positively and negatively.
