Monumental Late Medieval German Relief Group, Lower Rhine, 15th - 16th Century - Carved oak. Measures 86.5 x 188 cm. Altarpiece composed of four sculptural groups: in the center, Saint Veronica holds the veil revealing the face of Christ; next to her appears a bishop on horseback riding through the crowd; to the left, Christ stands before Pilate, probably from the mid-15th century; to the right, Saint Martin offers his cloak to two beggars. The group is flanked by a kneeling man from a later period on one side and by two figures on the other. Work from the Lower Rhine, 15th-early 16th century with later additions.
