Stoneware pouring jug, Yuan school of China, 13th-14th century - Beige stoneware with a glaze in honey, green, and brown tones. Measures 22 x 8 cm. The jug has an ovoid body with rounded shoulders, a flared cylindrical neck, and an everted mouth. It features a side strap handle, a small opposite ring handle, and a pouring spout applied to the shoulder. The surface displays an incised grid pattern beneath an irregular vitreous glaze with abundant splashes and streaks in olive and dark brown tones, creating a spontaneous textural effect characteristic of ceramic production from southern China during the Yuan Dynasty. The robust modeling and the vibrant colors of the glaze underscore the utilitarian nature elevated to an aesthetic level through the masterful firing technique. The combination of geometric incision and fluid glazes reveals affinities with the tradition of Cizhou kilns and other folk pottery from the Mongolian period, where the expressiveness of the material took center stage.
