This important polychrome terracotta bust depicts a member of the Medici family, traditionally identified as Cosimo de' Medici, and is attributed to Giovanni Bastianini, a Florentine sculptor active in Tuscany in the mid-19th century and renowned for his extraordinary Renaissance-style recreations. The work exhibits a distinctly historicist style, with meticulous construction of the face, detailed rendering of physiognomic features, and a strong evocation of Italian Quattrocento portraiture.
