Bidspirit auction | Francesco de Mura (Naples, 1696

Francesco de Mura (Naples, 1696 – 1782), “Madonna with the Bambino” - Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 63.5 x 50 cm. A delicate devotional composition attributed to the Neapolitan painter Francesco de Mura, one of the leading figures of Rococo painting in Naples during the 18th century and a prominent pupil of Francesco Solimena. The work depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, accompanied by two cherubs, within an intimate and luminous composition of great pictorial refinement. The softness of the faces, the elegance of the drapery, the pearly quality of the flesh tones, and the delicate transition of light are characteristics fully consistent with De Mura's mature work and with the Neapolitan Rococo sensibility derived from Corrado Giaquinto. The composition is notable for the expressive tenderness between Mother and Child and for the ethereal treatment of the angelic figures, creating an atmosphere of intense spirituality and courtly grace. It retains its carved and gilded Baroque frame. A work of considerable interest to collectors of 18th-century Italian painting and the Neapolitan school.
