Pietro Novelli, known as Il Monrealese, was the most important figure in 17th-century Sicilian painting and one of the artists who best fused the naturalist tradition derived from Caravaggio with the classicist influences arriving from Rome and Bologna. This work depicts Saint Peter in a half-bust composition, showing the apostle in his later years holding the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, his most characteristic iconographic attribute. The saint is portrayed with profound psychological intensity, through an image of great sobriety and spiritual strength that focuses all attention on the expression of his face. The directed lighting highlights the apostle's broad forehead, graying beard, and hands, creating a powerful contrast with the dark background and reinforcing the effect of introspection.
