Bidspirit auction | Farnese Hercules sculpture, Italy, 20th
Farnese Hercules sculpture, Italy, 20th century - Carved Carrara marble. Dimensions: height: 62 cm; base: 20 × 25 cm. Magnificent Carrara marble sculpture reproducing the celebrated Farnese Hercules, one of the most emblematic images of classical sculpture and one of the most influential models of Antiquity. The composition is inspired by the monumental statue attributed to Glychon of Athens, made in the 3rd century AD as a copy of a bronze original by Lysippos, sculptor to Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. The figure represents the hero after completing one of his twelve labors, leaning on his club covered with the skin of the Nemean Lion, while concealing behind his back the apples of the Garden of the Hesperides, symbol of his victory and the culmination of his feats. Executed in Carrara marble, this work stands out for the superb quality of its carving, the vigorous anatomical treatment, and the meticulous modeling of the musculature, faithfully reproducing the monumental proportions and powerful presence of the celebrated original housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. From a private collection in Rome, it is an elegant interpretation of one of the great icons of Western sculpture, ideal for both collectors and classical interior design projects. It is presented in excellent overall condition and is completely intact. This lot is in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU.
