JOSÉ PINAZO MARTÍNEZ (Rome, 1879 – Godella, Valencia, 1933) – Gitana - Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 100 × 113 cm. Signed in the lower left corner. This important composition by José Pinazo Martínez depicts a young Gypsy woman seated in a landscape, surrounded by traditional elements of Mediterranean folk culture, such as a basket overflowing with fruit, poultry, and a Valencian ceramic jug. The protagonist, wrapped in a rich shawl of intense reds and blacks, holds an apple while serenely gazing at the viewer, becoming the compositional axis of a scene imbued with lyricism and local symbolism. The work reveals the brilliant artistic personality of Pinazo Martínez, heir to the Valencian painting tradition and author of a style characterized by broad, vibrant brushstrokes, rich chromatic textures, and an extraordinary sensitivity for capturing the effects of light and atmosphere. The refined treatment of the fabrics, the intensity of the color range, and the careful integration of the figure with the landscape reveal the influence of Valencian luminism, reinterpreted from a thoroughly personal perspective. José Pinazo Martínez, son of the master Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench, developed a distinguished career in early 20th-century Spanish painting, particularly renowned for his portraits, genre scenes, and regionalist-inspired compositions. This work is an excellent example of his most representative pieces and his mastery of the human figure. It is in good condition. This lot is stored in an international warehouse (outside the EU).
