Bidspirit auction | Angel Freeing Saint Peter. Spanish
Angel Freeing Saint Peter. Spanish School of Jerónimo Jacinto Espinosa, 17th Century. - Oil on canvas. In the gloomy interior of a prison, a resplendent angel with white wings guides a group of male figures to freedom. The scene suggests an episode of miraculous liberation, possibly related to some hagiographic passage. The angel, whose figure is notable for its elegance and twisted movement, projects light onto the face of the prisoner following him, intensifying the drama of the moment. The tenebrist treatment, with strong contrasts between light and shadow, recalls the Caravaggist influence on 17th-century religious painting. The fluid brushwork and warm tones in the faces and clothing accentuate the spirituality of the event. Dimensions: 32 x 27 cm; 41 x 36 cm (frame).
