Beautiful and rare prayer rug from Anatolia, Ghiordes, 19th century
An antique and genuine Anatolian prayer rug.
This rug is one of a well-known group of rugs, attributed to Ghiordes, which follow directly on in the same tradition as the Transylvanian prayer rugs.
No sewn-on fringes. The fringes form the end of the warp yarns and are therefore an integral part of the rug as a genuine rug should be,
His density of knots is signal of extreme quality with far more than 500.000 per m2.

It seems very possible that the weaver of the present rug knew of older Ottoman rugs, as the flowering vase at the base of the field in the 16th century rug has been preserved. This rug features a design that is known as the mihrab. The area rugs with this pattern were created to be used in required daily prayers of the Islamic faith. The design featured in these antique rugs represents the prayer niche that is found in mosques.
The upper reserve includes a row of tulip blossoms that are familiar from other Anatolian village rugs, in particular, those from Ladik, for example.
The rug has very soft hand spun wool and is in good condition with slight wear, few signs of age and no repairs.
It is suitable for normal domestic use or would make a good display item as a wall hanging.
