Dmitry Sergeyevich Merezhkovsky was born in St. Petersburg in 1866 - a famous poet, novelist, critic and publicist. One of the founders of Russian symbolism . Graduated from the historical and philological Department of St. Petersburg University. His father held a prominent position in the Palace Department. In 1889 Merezhkovsky married the poet Zinaida Gippius. The first collection of poems was published in 1888. Translated Greek tragedies, went to Greece. In 1895-1905, he published the religious and philosophical trilogy 'Christ and the Antichrist'. Author of the study ' L. Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Life and work` (1901-1902), ` Russian `trilogy` Kingdom of the Beast ' (1908-1918). The first collection of Merezhkovsky's works was published by the Association M. O. wolf (1911-13) in 17 volumes, the second by D. I. Sytin in 1914 in 24 volumes. (with a bibliographic index compiled by O. ya. Larin). Merezhkovsky's novels and the book about Tolstoy and Dostoevsky have been translated into many languages and made him famous in Western Europe. Literary fame was brought to Merezhkovsky by his historical, literary and publicistic works: Eternal companions (1897), Tolstoy and Dostoevsky (1901-1902), the Coming ham (1906), in a quiet pool (1908), Not the world, but the sword (1908), and others. Symbolism was also characteristic of Merezhkovsky, a novelist: the Christ and Antichrist trilogy (1896-1905), the Alexander I novels (1913), December 14 (1918). Merezhkovsky participated in the organization of Religious and philosophical meetings in St. Petersburg (1901-1903), edited the magazine "New path" (1903-1904), was one of the active participants of the Religious and philosophical society in St. Petersburg (from 1907). He emigrated in 1920. In emigration, a number of his works appeared - the Birth of the gods (1925), the Messiah (1928), the Secret of the three (1925), the Secret of the West: Atlantis-Europe (1930), Jesus the Unknown (1932), Napoleon (1929), Dante (1939).
