Saint Petersburg: A. F. Devrien's Edition. 1914? VII, 216 p., Fig. Hardcover, size 22.5 x 30.5 cm. Good condition. A fragment of the flyleaf is torn off, small dirt and scuffs on the binding, the block falls apart into a notebook, the spine is peeled off from the block, the inscription on the paragraph in pencil.


The most famous illustrated edition of the fables of Ivan Andreevich Krylov (1768-1844). The book was published by A. F. devrien with 105 drawings in the text and 48 illustrations in colors based on the original artist A. K. Zhab. Alphonse Konstantinovich Zhaba (1878-1942) - famous Russian painter, watercolorist, book artist. From 1899 to 1907, he studied at the Academy of Arts under P. Kovalevsky and F. Roubaud. He worked as a genre painter, landscape painter, historical painter, and had a bright artistic style. Founding member of the artists 'Community (1908-1930), member of the watercolorists' section Of the society for the encouragement of artists (1929). During the war, he made posters for the Association of Leningrad artists "Battle pencil" (1941-1942). He illustrated and designed children's books for the Raduga publishing house: M. Shkapskaya's" Aleshina galoshes "(1925), V. Khomutov's" Fishermen on the Volga "(1926), as well as a real luxury edition of Krylov's" Fables". The book is decorated with elegant plot screensavers and endings, and expressive original color illustrations in the sheet, printed in chromolithography in the printing house of the supplier of the Court of His Imperial Majesty, the Partnership of R. R. Golik and A. I. Vilborg.
