Korsakov, one of the founders of the nosological direction in psychiatry, founder of the Moscow society of neuropathologists and psychiatrists, initiator of the first in Russia `Journal of neuropathology and psychiatry` (1901), which now bears his name, Chairman of the Board of the Pirogov society of doctors, founder of the Moscow scientific school of psychiatry - `teacher of teachers` of Russian psychiatry, among whose representatives: V. p. Serbsky, N. N. Bazhenov, A, A. tokarsky, P. p. Kashchenko, P. B. Gannushkin, F. E. Rybakov, N. A. Bernstein. Sergey Sergeevich became world-famous thanks to his doctoral dissertation "on alcoholic paralysis" (1887), in which, based on the etiology and pathogenesis, he singled out polyneuritic psychosis as an independent disease.
