[Mikhail Nikolayevich Pokrovsky (1868-1932) - the largest Russian Marxist historian, Soviet political figure. The leader of Soviet historians in the 1920s.

Written on the basis of a huge number of already published sources, "Russian History since ancient times" was the first systematic coverage of the history of the country from a materialistic point of view, from the primitive communal system to the end of the XIX century.

In the second half of the 1930s, his writings were publicly condemned. Pokrovsky's theory was condemned to disappear not only from the curriculum, but also from public memory. It was declared that his concept was "devoid of a sense of the motherland", and his works were distinguished by "ignoring Leninist-Stalinist instructions on issues of history". For Pokrovsky, the history of Russia, since the XVI century, is only a part of the history of world capitalism. The Pokrovsky school broke with the interpretation of Russian history as an exclusively political process and demonstrated that the Russian bureaucracy itself was a hostage of public relations and interests. Trading capital played a key role in this system of interests. Assessing the role of Russia in the emerging global capitalist economy, M. N. Pokrovsky anticipated the research of Western historians and sociologists of the late XX century-Fernand Braudel, Immanuel Wallerstein, Giovanni Arriga.]
