Carl Bernard von cotta (it. Carl Bernhard von Cotta; 24 October 1808 — 14 September 1879, Freiberg (Saxony)) — German geologist, paleobotanist, teacher, Professor (since 1842).

Studied at the Freiberg mining Academy (1831) and the University of Heidelberg, as well as at his father's forest school.

At first, he was attracted to botany, and cotta was one of the first to use a microscope to determine the structure of fossil plants. Later, he turned his attention to Geology and studied sedimentary rocks and minerals.

He studied their deposits in the Austrian Alps, Hungary, Serbia and Romania. And also-soils and their influence on the geography and history of Germany.

From 1842 to 1874, he was a Professor of Geology at the Freiberg mining Academy and was considered an excellent teacher.

Cotta-geologist who introduced the genetic system of petrography (1866), the main principles of which are still used today. Before Darwin, he expressed the concept of evolution, having formulated the basic biogenetic law in 1848.

Cott's research focuses on regional and historical Geology, in particular the region of Saxony-Thuringia, as well as on metallogeny. Cotta was engaged in geological mapping and regularities of mineral deposits placement.

Together with Professor Karl Friedrich Naumann, he published geological maps of Saxony between 1836 and 1847.

Died in Freiberg, Saxony.
