The 4th Moscow men's gymnasium with a noble boarding school was established on June 1, 1849. At the closure of the Moscow Institute for nobles, whose continued existence is futile was recognized in connection with the anticipated opening in Moscow of the 2nd cadet corps, revealed difficulties in the distribution of the majority of pupils of the Institute, existing educational institutions. In this regard, N. M. Konshin was ordered to open the 4th gymnasium in the building of the Institute. In addition to building from Noble institution of the gymnasium went still and a mortgage Moscow University. Thus, until 1861, the 4th Moscow gymnasium was in Pashkov's house.

Initially, 146 students were enrolled in seven classes of the gymnasium, mostly children of nobles-115 people. There were 81 boarders. The teaching staff consisted of: Director, inspector, law teacher, 7 senior and 3 Junior teachers, as well as a teacher of penmanship, drawing and drawing; the boarders were supervised by two supervisors.

In 1849, the Russian Empire was reformed, according to which the gymnasium course was divided into primary (General) and special education. In the three lower classes of the gymnasium gave the basics of science, taught the Russian language, mathematics, history, geography, German and French, penmanship, drawing, drawing and the law of God. In the next four, actually gymnasium classes for those, except for compulsory subjects, as philosophy, literature, Economics, aesthetics, psychology, mathematics, physics and others, introduced additional lessons in the Russian language, mathematics, law. For those who were going to continue their studies at the University, were given also a thorough knowledge of Latin (for all) and Greek (for entering the philosophical Department) languages. In 1850, the first issue was made among 17 people, of whom one received a gold medal, and 4 were entitled to the rank of XIV class.

In 1851 the Board of the 4th gymnasium was joined Board 1st gymnasium, which increased its population by 37 people; however, in 1854, at the 1st gymnasium of the pension was resumed.

By 1859, the number of students in the gymnasium reached 323.

In 1861, to vacate the building under the Rumyantsev Museum, the school purchased the estate of Prince Trubetskoy on Pokrovka; this has been written off, not paid by the school debt of the Moscow University. Translation of the 4th gymnasium in the neighborhood area with the 2nd and 3rd schools was accompanied by a significant change in personnel: the number of students decreased from 368 (late 1860) to 286 (1863), including 66 boarders and 89 polupansiona. In a three-story old house with two wings, classes began on September 1, 1861. The upper floor of the main building housed the house Church of the Annunciation.

In 1864, a new Charter of gymnasiums was adopted, according to which gymnasiums were divided into three types: classical with two ancient languages, classical with one ancient language and real gymnasiums. 4th Moscow men's gymnasium became a classic with teaching of two ancient languages.

In 1882 the school had 480 students; 1898 — 442, with the children of the nobility was only 50%.
