The remaining volumes of the first and all subsequent editions were printed over the next ten years or more. In the fourth edition, only the first two volumes were released. And the third volume was offered to subscribers to purchase from the third edition (published in 1903). The most famous and popular work of the children's writer Elizabeth Nikolaevna Vodovozova (1844-1923). The luxuriously illustrated edition is devoted to the traditions and customs of the daily life of the peoples of the European continent, their festive culture, the principles of the political system, and social relations. Many illustrations, engraved on wood, were specially made for the publication based on the drawings of Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov.
