J.M. Hillesum was forty years, from 1890 to 1930, curator of the Amsterdam-based Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana. This library was created from a gift from the Amsterdam Jewish banker George Rosenthal (1828 - 1909). In 1880, he had donated the world-famous Hebraica and Judaica collection of his father, who was rabbi in Germany, to the city of Amsterdam. This George Rosenthal had also donated the money with which the house in Rijnsburg, where Spinoza of 1660-1663 had lived, could be bought and made into a museum.
