Leo Cohen, a Bulgarian poet, critic and journalist of Jewish origin, was born on September 19, 1903 in Yambol, in the family of a shoemaker. He graduated from the pedagogical school in Yambol. He studied pedagogy at Sofia University, but due to lack of funds he interrupted his studies. He returned to his hometown and became a teacher at the Jewish school. He has been publishing his works since 1920 - the newspaper ”Bulgaran”. He collaborated with the newspapers ”Burgaski far”, ”Vecherna burgaska posha”, ”Svetlostruy”, ”Literaturen glas”, ”Vestnik za zhenata”, the Jewish ”Ashofar”, ”Maccabi” and the Yambol ”Trakiets”, whose editor he was, and ”Tundzha”. One of the authors of the ”Manifesto of the Society for the Fight against Poets”, printed in August 1925 in Yambol. He edited the literary collections in Yambol ”Pleada” (1924), ”Perun” (1928), the children's magazine ”Sinchets” (1938), the collection ”Youth Tourism in Yambol” (1930). He led people at the Jewish society ”Maccabi”. Author of the books ”Pages” (1928), ”My People” (poems, 1938), ”Poetry and Life. Literary Sketches and Reflections” (1938), ”The Jews in Bulgarian Literature” (1939). Member of the Union of Writers from the Province and the Union of Bulgarian Journalists. From September 1, 1949 until his death on April 8, 1957, he was editor-in-chief of the Yambol newspaper ”People's Comrade”.
