Bernard Naftali Halpern was a French immunologist and allergist born in Tarnoruda (in present-day Ukraine, then in the Russian Empire) on November 2, 1904 and died on September 23, 1978 in Paris1. His research was awarded the CNRS gold medal. Coming from a Jewish family of eight children, deported by the Tsar, with his family to Siberia, in 1914, like many Jewish families, he returned after the revolution to Ukraine, to leave it definitively in 1920 when his village was attacked by the Cossacks2. In a train of German prisoners, he joined Poland alone at the age of 16, where he would complete his secondary studies, living off the lessons given to his little friends. He finally came to France in 1926, at the age of 22, to begin studying medicine, first in Nancy and then in Paris in 1928. At the same time, he worked in the experimental biology laboratory of Professor Gautrelet at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. Having joined as a laboratory boy, he quickly became one of the master's main collaborators.
