The signature under the card, in place of “Il Presidente del Comitato”, reads: Giuseppe Zamboni (Giuseppe Zamboni) This is the first and last name of the chairman of the committee of the Dante Alighieri Society in Leipzig Committee of the Dante Alighieri Society in Leipzig (Lipsia) —so at the time of 1939 Lavinia lived in Leipzig (Germany). ”Società Dante Alighieri”- an Italian cultural organization founded in 1889, with the aim of spreading the Italian language and culture abroad. Membership in it, especially in the 1930s, often meant: belonging to the Italian diaspora, interest in Italian culture, or participation in educational and diplomatic activities. Giuseppe Zamboni (not to be confused with the philosopher of the same name, 1875–1950), had a German mother and studied German literature in Florence (doctorate in 1927 under Barthold Heinrich Brockes, in: Atti del Reale Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti 90, 1930–31, pp. 879–945). In 1936 he became a visiting lecturer in Italian at Leipzig, and from 1940 a professor. In 1943 he became a cultural officer at the embassy of the Italian Social Republic in Berlin. After the war he taught at the Scuola Normale di Pisa until 1949, then went to Basel as a lecturer and became a full professor of Italian literature there in 1962. Zamboni left 8,000 volumes to the Romansh seminar in Basel.
