Size ca.: 16.5 x 10.8 cm. (6.5 x 4.2 inches) Some tiny stains Alfred Fyodorovich Lorens (Alfred Edward John Lorens), 1830–1896) was born in the city of Mitava. The exact date the photographer began working in St. Petersburg is unknown. At the World Exhibition in London in 1862, Lawrence presented photographic portraits and stereoscopic views of the environs of St. Petersburg. Lawrence was one of the first in the capital to take pictures on its streets and squares, combining the experience of the painting tradition with the intuitive use of the possibilities of light painting. The catalog of landscape photographs published by A. Lawrence contains 167 perspectives, panoramas, palaces and other important buildings, churches, monuments of St. Petersburg. It also includes 55 views of the ”Pearl Necklace” of the northern capital - Peterhof, Tsarskoye Selo and Pavlovsk. The extensive legacy of Alfred Lawrence is stored in numerous state and private collections.
