As a one-club player, he played 347 senior games in 18 seasons for Randwick before turning to coaching. Under him, the Galloping Green won five consecutive Sydney Premier League titles and beat Manly in the 1981 Grand Final. A year later he was appointed the head coach of the Wallabies. During his time as coach - 1982-83 and 1988-94 - Australia won 49 of the 74 Test matches they played. As well as the famous 12-6 victory over England in the 1991 Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham, Dwyer led Australia to victory in the Bledisloe Cup in 1992 and 1994. After a spell abroad with the Racing Club in France and Leicester and Bristol in England, Dwyer returned home in 2001 to coach the New South Wales Waratahs.
