Weight: 465 pp. Fascinating biography on the famous diplomat, writer and owner of the renowned Berlin literary cafe (Literarischer Salon), Rahel Varnhagen (1771-1833). The ”Literarische Salon” was meeting point for many philosophers, artists and aspiring writers as well as one of the starting points of emancipation for women (as well as Jews like Varnhagen nee Levin herself). Written by Karl August Varnhagen (1785-1858), Rahels husband and himself a known diplomat and writer. Contains letters to his wife as well as correspondents of Rahel Varnhagen with many influential personalities of the time, like David Veit, Henriette Mendelssohn, Karoline v. Humboldt, Friedrich v. Schlegel, Prinz Louis Ferdinand v. Preußen, Graf v. Tilly, Adam v. Müller, Friedrich v. Gent etc. Includes short biographical entries on the correspondants. Rosa Maria Antonetta Paulina Assing (née Varnhagen; 28 May 1783, Düsseldorf – 22 January 1840, Hamburg) was a German lyric poet, prose-writer, educator, translator, and silhouette artist. She was the elder sister of Karl August Varnhagen, sister-in-law of Rahel Levin, wife of David Assing (1787 – 1842), and mother of Ottilie and Ludmilla Assing. Her friends included Amalie Schoppe, David Veit, and Fanny Tarnow. Rachel Varnhagen von Ense (nee Levin; May 19, 1771 Berlin– March 7, 1833 Berlin was a German writer and feminist of Jewish descent; hostess of a literary salon that was frequented by Heine, Boerne, Schelling, Chamisso and other famous writers (she played a significant role in the history of German literary movements of that time). Also known by the pseudonyms Rachel Robert, Robert-Thornow and Friederike Antonia (the last was her baptismal name). Sister of the poet Ludwig Robert; wife of Karl August Varnhagen von Ense[8]. Rachel Varnhagen is considered a member of the Romantic and European Enlightenment eras. She advocated for Jewish and women's rights. Hannah Arendt, who wrote the biography Rachel Varnhagen: A Jewish Life (1957), described her as her ”closest friend, though dead for centuries.”
