Weight: 1510 gr. Max Schlesinger (b. April 18, 1878, Berlin – d. ca. 1942, Riga) was a German-Jewish intellectual and commercial agent best known as the author of ”The History of the Symbol. An Essay” (Geschichte des Symbols. Ein Versuch), published in Berlin in 1912. Born into a Jewish merchant family in Berlin. Worked as a commercial agent, trading in textiles and lighting products in early 20th-century Berlin. Married in 1916; divorced in 1939. During World War I, briefly volunteered for medical services. ublished a significant philosophical and cultural study on the history of the symbol in 1912. His book ”Geschichte des Symbols” is regarded as one of the earliest comprehensive attempts to trace the historical and conceptual development of the symbol in Western thought. The work was reviewed in English in 1920 in The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease under the title ”The History of the Symbol.” Due to the Nazi regime’s persecution of Jews, Schlesinger lost his business and was deported to Riga on January 19, 1942. He perished there, most likely during mass executions carried out shortly after arrival.
