Condition: some foxing, light brown paper. Mann had already come into contact with Count Hermann Keyserling in various ways. For example, in 1920 he had addressed the Baltic private philosopher in an open letter entitled ”Clarifications.” Keyserling, whose family had been dispossessed after the First World War, held quite conservative views, and especially in 1918/19, Mann had still partially identified with them. The focus of this work is homosexuality, a topic that, as we know today, was of particular importance to Mann. Here he even states: ”Marriage, then—a problem. It has become problematic over time, like everything else.” In general, the theory of so-called ”male associations” as a second social principle alongside the traditional family was being seriously discussed in intellectual circles during those years. The text was written as a contribution to a work edited by Keyserling, ”The Marriage Book: A New Meaning in Harmony with the Voices of Leading Contemporaries” (1925). It was also reprinted in abridged form in newspapers and included in published works. Thomas Mann, 1875–1955, is one of the most important writers of the 20th century. With him, the modern German novel entered the world of literature. Mann's multifaceted work has received an almost unsurpassed positive response worldwide. From 1933 onward, he lived in exile, first in Switzerland, then in the USA. Mann did not return to Europe until 1952, where he died in Zurich in 1955.
