Hinde Zaretsky (born 1899) was a Yiddish poet who immigrated to the United States from Belorussia in 1914. She faced challenges with English, so she continued to publish poetry in Yiddish for over half a century, both in periodicals and in seven or more stand-alone volumes. She lived in the Bronx, where she frequented Crotona Park, and her work is characterized by her life experiences and cultural identity. Early life and immigration: Born in Petrikov (Pyotrkow), Minsk district, Belorussia, in 1899, she was raised in a religious household but also studied secular subjects with tutors. She arrived in America in 1914 at age 15, carrying a notebook of poems that was confiscated by a customs official who suspected them of being revolutionary. Zaretsky studied at evening schools in New York, including Washington Irving High School. She attended Barnard College from 1928 to 1930 and the Art Workshop from 1930 to 1931. She later became a kindergarten teacher. She was a prolific Yiddish writer, publishing steadily in periodicals from 1931 onwards and releasing at least seven volumes of poetry. She continued to write in Yiddish despite failing to make the linguistic transition to English. In the 1930s, she and her husband moved to Crotona Park North in the Bronx, near where she would meet other Yiddish writers in Crotona Park. Her book Der ferter Nigun/ The Fourth Melody was published in 1960.
