Rothschild served as a rabbi in Alzey and wrote primarily in German. His intellectual position was moderate and scholarly: neither radical reform nor strict traditionalism. He sought to explain Judaism as a historically developing religious culture, while maintaining respect for its ritual and spiritual depth.
