Robert Schmidt (born December 2, 1878, in Bad Oeynhausen; died October 6, 1952, in Milan) was a German art historian. Robert Schmidt studied art history under Heinrich Woelfflin from 1900, first in Basel, then in Berlin. In 1904, he became a research assistant to Justus Brinckmann at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg. From 1905, he worked at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin under Otto von Falke, initially as a research assistant, from 1907 as an assistant, and from 1915 as curator. From 1918 to 1927, he was director of the Museum of Applied Arts in Frankfurt am Main. In 1928, he returned to Berlin and was director of the Museum of Decorative Arts there until 1945. After the war, on February 13, 1948, he became head of the Zonal Fine Arts Repository, the British art repository at Celle Castle, which housed, among other things... the holdings of the Berlin museums were collected.
