Antique German Bronze ”Bellarmine” (Bellarmine) / ”Bartmann” (Bartmann) Bronze Vase - Antique bronze ”Bellarmine” (Bellarmine) / ”Bartmann” (Bartmann) bronze vase, Germany, approximately 1900, designed in a round form with a narrow neck and rounded handle. Decorated on the front with bearded face masks and medallion ornaments.  Weight: 897 g. Height: 12.5 cm. Light wear, patina.  * The ”Bellarmine” jar (Bellarmine jar/jug) is a type known primarily as a glazed stoneware vessel originating in the Rhine region of Germany, and it was very popular throughout Europe, particularly in England and the Netherlands, during the 16th and 17th centuries. The name ”Bellarmine” derives from an Italian Jesuit cardinal named Roberto Bellarmino (Roberto Bellarmino, 1542–1621). The Bellarminists were known for their fierce opposition to Protestantism.
