Signed in the plate (printed) and signed in pencil. Numbered EA (Epreuve d'Artiste). Framed with passe-partout under glass in a gilded wooden frame. Dimensions: 30×20 cm. Frame: 54.5×44 cm. Light wear, slight yellowing; right margins appear brown with a few stains along their length. Reference to this authentic woodcut can be found in the Michler/Lopsinger Raisonné catalogue of lithographs and woodcuts (pages 102–114) * Between 1951 and 1963, Salvador Dalí completed a series of illustrations for the ”Divine Comedy” by the Florentine medieval poet Dante Alighieri (1265–1321). This poem, written in the first person, describes Dante's imaginary journey through the three realms of the afterlife, from the darkness of error in Hell to the divine light of revelation in Paradise. Dalí created a series of 100 color-printed woodcuts, one for each ”Canto” (section) of the ”Divine Comedy”: 34 for Inferno, 33 for Purgatorio, and 33 for Paradiso.
