A book of significant cultural, historical, and artistic value, particularly in light of the era in which it was published. A time capsule of the ”Golden Age” of the Weimar Republic in Germany, produced a few years before the rise of the Third Reich-era regime, reflecting the cosmopolitan and open spirit of that period.  Contains approximately 600 illustrations integrated into the text, as well as 40 printed plates (some in color) based on works and drawings by classical and modern artists. The title page features one of the color plates with a descriptive caption beneath. Text set in German Gothic typeface. 539 pages. Gilt page upper edges.  Half-leather and hardcover cloth binding, decorated with lettering on the front board and gilt lettering on the spine. Accompanied by part of the original cardboard slipcase (heavily worn and with losses).  31.5 cm. 3.19 kg.  In good condition; light wear to binding, light abrasions particularly to the spine; interior: mild, light yellowing to pages.  * Hermann Siegfried Rehm — was a German scholar of culture and folklore who specialized in the history of humor and comic literature.  * Kutter Offenburg — who wrote the introduction, was a German writer, journalist, and intellectual. Due to his views and the political climate in Germany, he later emigrated to Australia, where he became a respected political commentator on radio and wrote against the totalitarian regimes of Europe.
