The Holocaust of European Jewry - Savings book of the damned bank in the Theresienstadt ghetto - The establishment of the Jewish self-administered bank in the ghetto - bears many signatures! Theresienstadt Ghetto At the end of the war, the Nazis destroyed these registers and the bank statements so that no trace of their criminal acts would remain. and erase the criminal past.
The German goals in establishing the bank in the Theresienstadt ghetto:
- The Germans were interested in presenting Theresienstadt as a "civilian" "normal" city.
- Establishment of the Jewish Self-Administration Bank (verwaltung-Selbst juedischen der Bank) on January 1, 1943
It was intended to give the city the appearance of a normal city, whose inhabitants, even if they were imprisoned during the war, still enjoy full civil rights. Allegedly, funds were deposited in the "personal account" of a Theresienstadt "resident", when in fact they were not
Money could be withdrawn from the account.
- The bank is also intended to receive the financial transfers sent from the outside to the camp prisoners with the approval of the SS, which were transferred
to the camp headquarters. The beneficiaries had to personally confirm receiving the money, even though the money was not paid to them in cash
and only registered to their credit in their bank savings account.
The Jews in the ghetto had to carry the register with them for inspection by every SS man.
Credit: Beit Terezin - to commemorate the murdered men of the Terezin ghetto.
