Old boxing gloves from the forties - signed by - Max Schmeling! The boxer that Hitler adopted as the hero of the Nazi nation. and heavyweight boxing champion of the world. At the time he fought against Max Bear and the fight was presented as a fight between the forces of good and the forces of Evil.
Schmeling himself was not a Nazi supporter. He protested to Hitler about the recommendation to get rid of his Jewish coach Joe Jacobs. He also refused to register as a member of the Nazi Party and to divorce his Czech wife Annie Ondra. He even hid two Jewish boys on Kristallnacht, sons of the Levin family, who found refuge in the hotel where Schmeling was staying in Berlin, and even helped them escape from Germany. For this he was awarded the "Raul Wallenberg Award".
The loss to Lewis disgraced Schmeling in the eyes of the Nazi government. He was the only top German athlete to be drafted, at the age of 34, as a paratrooper into the Wehrmacht in World War II. He was wounded in the battles and also lost his fortune.
