Letter of recommendation for appointing a great Talmid Chacham as a Rav in Kreisberg, handwritten, signed and with the stamp of Rabbi Uri David Apirion Av Beis Din of Zager. Zager, [1886].


"The owner of this document the qualified sharp Rav knowledgeable in Shas and Poskim a great Mefalpel ... Bar Avahan and Bar Oryan Sheraga Meir I am assured he will be one of the greatest rabbis of Yidroel ... he deserves to be a Rav of a large city, since he is fit to lead by his wisdom a large crowd ... he received his Semicha from several leading Geonim in our country and is deserving of the title". A letter by Rabbi Uri David Apirion to Rabbi Nachman Edel with a request that he assist Rabbi Sheraga Meir Benvanisti to be appointed a Rav in Kreisberg.

Rabbi Uri David Apirion ben Rabbi Yosef of Korlitz, studied for several years at the Beid Midrash in Eyshishok. Was Av Beis Din of Nemoksht and later Av Beis Din of Zager- Yashan, Kovno district, Lithuania. Became renowned in the world of yeshivas after the publication of his Sefer the "Apirion David" Shut in 1872.

His son-in-law Rabbhi Shabtai Chaim Shochet authored the Sefer "Zahav Shacus". One of Rabbi Uri's grandson, Rabbi Baruch Shlam, was a student at the Knesses Yisroel Yeshiva in Slabodka, and expert Shuv in Boisk , who later served as a Rav in South Africa. Additional details regarding his pedigree and descendents are presented in Sefer Kehilat Korlitz, pp. 81-82.


Rabbi Sheraga Meir - possibly, the Gaon Rabbi Sheraga Meir Leizerowitz who was born in Kelm, Lithuania, and was appointed Rav of the "Chevras Shas" community in London in ca. 1890, several years after the writing of this letter. Rabbi Sheraga Meir immigrated to the Land of israel in his old age, where he passed away in 1929. 


Fold marks, aging stains and ink spreading, glued on thick paper. fair-good condition.
