Sefer Toras Chaim, on Chumash Bereshis, by the Mitteler Rebbe of Lubavitch – Warsaw, 1866 – first edition of part 2 – exemplar of Rabbi Mordechai Duber Slonim, head of Collel Chabad in Chevron (son of the Rebbetzin Menucha Rachel, the author’s daughter), with his signature, and with the signature of his son, Rabbi Shneur Zalman Slonim, Av Beis Din of Jaffa and an ownership notation in his handwriting. Exemplar of the leaders and heads of the “Collel Chabad” community in the mid 1800’s. Two parts in one volume. First edition of part 2. Part 1: Bereshis—Chayei Sarah. Part 2: Toldos—Vayechi. Two title pages for part 1 (name an print location in red ink). Separate title page for part 2. This is an exemplar of the illustrious Rabbi Mordechai Duber Slonim of Chevron (the author’s grandson). On the second title page of part 1 are three of his signatures: “Mordechai Duber Slonim”. On the front flyleaf are ownership notations: “This Sefer belongs to the renowned Chossid, Rabbi Duber Slonim, appointee of Collel Chabad, who wished to reside here in Chevron”. “This Sefer. Toras Chaim, belongs to the exalted Rabbi of illustrious lineage, Rabbi Mordechai Duber Slonim”. An ownership notation in the handwriting and signature of his son Rabbi Shneur Zalman: “This Sefer Toras Chaim belongs to the famously renowned Rabbi Mordechai Slonim, grandson of the author on his mother’s side, and he is fifth generation to the author of the Maharsha on the Gemara. So speaks he who writes in honor f the Torah and her students, Shneur Zalman Slonim, son of my illustrious father Rabbi Mordechai Duber Slonim – Shneur Zalman”. The renowned Rabbi Mordechai Duber Slonim (1840-1916) was born in Lubavitch in 1840 to his father, Rebbi Yaakov Kuli and his mother, the righteous Rebbetzin Menucha Rachel, daughter of the author, the Mitteler Rebbe, and granddaughter of the Ba’al HaTanya. On his father’s side, he was the tenth generation from the Maharsha (see the biography of the Rav of Lyadi, pp.37-39). Immigrated as a child to Eretz Yisrael, together with his parents, and they settled in Chevron, where he lived all his life, and where he is buried. Travelled several times from Chevron to Lubavitch. First in 1880 to the Maharash, and then again in 1885 and 1891 to his son, the Rashab, to which he came together with his son, Rabbi Shneur Zalman. The Rebbe Rashab affectionally refers to Rabbi Mordechai Duber as “my son-in-law” in his letters, (despite Rabbi Mordechai Duber being several decades his senior) and to his son, Rabbi Shneur Zalman, as “My grandchild” (This due to a specific incident that occurred in his youth – see the appreviated Chabad history, pg. 108). When he visited Lubavitch, the Rebbe Rashab would spend hours listening to his stories of their forefathers, the rebbes of Chabad, which Rabbi Mordechai Duber had heard from his mother, the Rebbetzin Menucha Rachel. His son, the illustrious Gaon Rabbi Shneur Zalman (1862-1936) was one of the closest people to the Rebbe Rashab of Lubavitch, who taught him Chassidus during his time as a “Yoshev” in Lubavitch.
