Many Glosses Handwritten by the Geonim of Lithuania. Kehilos Yaakov, First Edition, Vilna 1847 - Sefer Kehilos Yaakov, responsa and Chiddushim, by Rabbi Yaakov Baruchin, Av Beis Din of Karlin (author of “Mishkenos Yaakov”) – Vilna, 1847 – first edition – with many genius glosses handwritten and undersigned by three of the Geonim of Lithuania: the Gaon Rabbi Refael Gordon, Av Beis Din of Wasilków, author of Nachal Eden, Rabbi Gavriel Zev Margolis of Grodno (son-in-law of the renowned Tzaddik Rabbi Nochumke of Grodno), and Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Bachrach of Amdor (Indura). On the title page and other pages is a signature and stamp: “From the bibliothèque of Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Bachrach in Amdor”. This volume resided in a bibliothèque in Amdor, Lithuania, in the home of the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Bachrach (grandson of the renowned Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Bachrach, Av Beis Din of Seini, author of ‘Hagahos HaGri”v’). in addition to his glosses are also many glosses from two other Geonim of Lithuania – Rabbi Refael Gordon and Rabbi Gavriel Zev Margoils. Some of the glosses are undersigned by the Geonim who wrote them. The great Gaon Rabbi Refael Gordon (1847/48-1931) Av Beis Din of Wasilków and from the Rabbonim of Bialistock. Known from a young age as a genius and immensely proficient in both Talmudim and the Medrashim of Chazal. He had a phenomenal memory. Known mostly for his Sefer “Nachal Eden” (Vilna 1897), which made him known the world over as a sharp critic and a Gaon in anything related to the Yerushalmi, and to the history of the times of Chazal, and especially regarding Geometry. The Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Hakohen, the renowned Moreh Tzedek of Vilna, writes in his approbation about him: “He is versed in the entire Talmud Bavli and Yerushalmi and the Medrashim of Chazal, with complete proficiency, they are engraved upon his heart and lie in his memory. I was astounded to see that such a young man as he is such a master of wisdom and overflowing with the words of the Shas and the Poskim…” In addition to this Sefer, his glosses on the Yerushalmi were printed in some volumes of the Vilna edition, and in various collections were printed many of the glosses he would frequently write on the margins of his Seforim, mostly related to the Yerushalmi or the teachings of the Gr”a. The Gaon Rabbi Gavriel Zev Margolis (1848-1935) was a distinct disciple of the Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Barit of Vilna, and a son-in-law of the renowned Tzaddik Rabbi Nochum of Horadna (Grodno). He was a student in the Volozhin Yeshiva. In 1829 he received Smicha from the Netziv and from his Rebbe, Rabbi Yaakov Barit. In 1872 he was appointed Rav of Dubrowna, and in 1879 was appointed Moreh Tzedek in Grodno. In 1907 he emigrated to the US, and served as the Chief Rabbi of Boston until 1910. From 1912 and on he served as Raavad of Congregation Adas Yisrael in New York. He was the author of several important works, the most known among them is his Sefer “Toras Gavriel”, five volumes on the Torah. [4], 32 (should be 48); 30 pp. 34cm. Moisture stains.
