Exemplar Owned by Rabbi Chaim Falaji With Handwritten Glosses - Sefer “Shyarei Knesset Hagedolah”, on Tur Orach Chaim, by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Benbenishti. Published during the author’s lifetime. Signed by the Gaon the Chabif – Izmir, 1671. ‘Shyarei Knesset Hagedolah, Orach Chaim section, by the singular in the generation, the great Rabbi, our master Rabbi Chaim Benbenishti’. A previous edition had been printed in Livorno, ‘And now he has set his hand again, adding to the content’. Avraham Gabbai press, Izmir, 1671. At the end are lists of Sugyot and phrases used by Rashi and the Tosfot, Phrases used by the Rambam, Phrases used by Rashi, the Ramban, and the Re’em in their commentaries on the Torah, rules of the Talmud, Rules in the methods of the Poskim, and other rules and concepts. This exemplar carries the signature of the universal Gaon, Rabbi Chaim Palaji. Also the signature of Rabbi Se’adya Halevi, a relative of Maran the Chabif – Rabbi Chaim Palaji of Izmir, where this Sefer was printed. The volume contains many long, important, scholarly handwritten glosses. It is clear that the glosses were written by various people, and most of them are certainly not from Rav Palaji. Additional ownership notations. Rabbeinu the Chabif, Rabbi Chaim Palaji (1788-1868) one of the greatest Sephardic Poskim and Kabbalists of all time. Born in Izmir to his father Rabbi Yaakov. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of the Rishon LeZion Rabbi Yosef Raphael ben Chaim Chazan author of Chikrei Lev, whom he served as his Meshamesh and eventually received his Semicha from him. In his Sefer Tzava'ah MeChaim, Rabbi Chaim recalls his early years: ”May Heaven and Earth be my witnesses that since the day I became cognizant until I was twenty years old I would study diligently day and night without any slacking”. Rabbi Chaim also studied with Rabbi Pinchas di Shigora. In 1837, Rabbi Chaim was appointed Av Beis Din of the great Beis Din of Izmir and in 1855 was appointed Chacham Bashi of the Jews of Turkey.
