Astounding Discover! Wonderful Treasure! Scores of Glosses by the Merkeves Hamishne That Had Been Hidden Away! - New pearl from the study halls. Astounding discovery for those who work to clarify the teachings of the Rambam. Scores of deep and long glosses on the Rambam, handwritten by one of the greatest elucidators of the Rambam – Rabbi Shlomo of Chelm, author of “Merkeves Hamishne” – glosses which had never been printed before! “Mishne Torah” by the Rambam – Fürth, 1767 – part III: Sefer Hafla’ah, Zera’im, Avoda, Korbanot, and Tahara. We have identified the source of these glosses by comparing them to “a manuscript from another place” (see, e.g. responsa “Lev Shlomo”, Mossad Harav Kook edition, 2003, p. 12; “Chug Ha’aretz Hashalem”, pp. 15-16, 159-160 and others), as well as unique phrases used exclusively by the author, and more. The glosses before us are marked by extreme depth, and a wide scope of figuring out the topics based on the Rambam’s methodology. The author debates many times on the words of the “Tosfot Yom Tov” and references them, as is his wont in his great works. The glosses are written in a clear and handsome handwriting. The immense and renowned Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Ashkenazi Rapaport of Chelm (1717-1781) was a Rabbi and Dayan in Chel. Author of “Merkevet Hamishne” on the Rambam’s Mishne Torah, one of the most significant elucidations written on the Rambam. In 1871 he began serving in the Rabbinate of Lemberg. Circa 1878 he decided to emigrate to Eretz Yisrael and traveled to Salonika for that putpose. There he printed a second edition of “Merkevet Hamishne” (which was actually a completely new, standalone work. In recent years, both editions were printed together as one). He and his wife died of a plague in Salonika and are buried there. There are differences of opinion as to whether he actually managed to get to Eretz Yisrael, staying there for a few months before returning to Salonika or whether he never left it at all. Rabbi Shlomo was a prolific author, and besides for his monumental work “Merkevet Hamishne” he also authored many other works. Many of his writings were left as manuscripts and some were only published during the 20th century. His writings in “Merkevet Hamishne” are quoted extensively in hudreds of Seforim of the Achronim, who give them serious consideration and weight. [1], 221; 166 pp. 34cm. Stains..
