Hundreds of Glosses On the Ri”F Yevamos and Kesubos – Never Printed! From the”Dvash Tamar” - Rav Alfas on tractates Yevamos and Kesubos – Pressburg, 1836 – with hundreds of scholarly glosses handwritten by the Gaon Rabbi David Teitelbaum of Mezhritch, author of the Sefer “Dvash Tamar” – some of the significant glosses here were printed in his Sefer and were copied in the “Oz Vehadar” edition, but a large poprtion of the glosses were never printed. Among the pages of the Sefer appears several times a stamp: “Shas Chabura who study in the south side of the great Beis Medrash in Mezhritch ”. This exemplar of the Ri”f contains hundreds of scholarly glosses handwritten by Rabbi David Teitelbaum. A large portion of them deals with verifying the correct verbiage. A large portion of the glosses was printed in the Sefer “Dvash Tamar” (2 parts, Warsaw, 1897), in the second part. These important glosses were also copied and printed in the new editions of the “Oz VeHadar” institute, who had recognized the significance of the glosses, especially regarding the verification of the correct version. Apparently, all of the glosses here which were not printed in his Sefer were probably written after the Sefer went to print. In addition, in some of the glosses he reneges on things he printed and dissents on them (see e.g. pg. 80/b: “and the Dvash Tamar deletes this, and it should not be deleted”.) In one of the glosses here Rabbi David mentions his grandson (Kesubos, 104/b): “…and when my illustrious grandson Yisrael Yehoshua of Białystok was a guest by me, and I showed him this surprising thing, and he said to me maybe it should say… and he gave me much pleasure because that is better than both of those ways”. Indeed, the Dvash Tamar had a grandson named Yisrael Yehoshua Heilpern. Rabbi David Teitelbaum’s daughter, Bodnah Rachel, was married to Rabbi Chaim Naftali Hirtz Heilpern, Av Beis Din of Białystok (son of the “Oneg Yom Tov”). They had a son, Rabbi Yisrael Yehoshua (1865-1931) who lived all his life in Białystok. This is the place to note that the wording of the stamp on the Sefer “ Shas Chabura who study in the south side of the great Beis Medrash in Mezhritch ” is very reminiscent of the wording printed in the title page of his Sefer Dvash Tamar: “the smallest of the tiny Shas Chabura in the great Beis Medrash here in my birth town and place of residence of my ancestors… of the community of Mezhritch ”.
