Responsa Mahari”T – Important and Noble Exemplar - Responsa Mahar”i of Trani (Mahari”t) – Fürth, 1768 – exemplar of the Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Yehoshua Halevi Horowitz, Av Beis Din of Zalozitz (Załoźce), grandson of the “Hafla’ah” and beloved son-in-law of the Gaon Rabbi Efraim Zalman Margolis – with his signature. On the title page are two signatures of Rabbi Yaakov: “A shield is He to all who sign in Him, the s. Yaakov Yehoshua Halevi Ish Horowitz”. In the second signature, which is blurred, he added “Av Beis Din of Zalozitz” . On the flyleaves are apparent pen testing, done in a humorous style of a mischievous child. They supposedly pose a question to one of Rabbi Yakov’s descendants, who had been named after the grandfather Rabbi Efraim Zalman: “Teach us, O holy and pure Rabbi of ours weather (!) it is permitted to drink coffee width (!) suger (!) on Rosh Hashana before blowing the Shofar”.{This apparently has to do with Rabbi Margolis’s ruling in his renowned Sefer “Mateh Efraim” (§588/2) where he allows to eat a small amount and to drink coffee with sugar, a leniency that many opposed and were stringent about}.
