Early Wimple For a Sefer Torah – 1874 - Wimpel – belt for tying up a Sefer Torah. Germany, 1874. Wimpel, a band which was sewn from the swaddling cloths used at a baby’s Bris. A few years later, when the child was weaned, or when he began to study Alef-Beis, or when he turned Bar Mitzvah, the cloth was brought to Shul and the boy was honored with wrapping up the Sefer Torah with it. These Wimpels were later kept in the Sanctuary and served as a communal record of the births. This Wimpel was prepared for embroidering, but that was never actually done. The child’s name is written on it in a nice script: “ Eliezer, son of Eliyahu Halevi, born in good fortune on Wednesday, the 17th of Iyar, 634 (May 4, 1874)”. Further on is written: “He shall grow to Torah, marriage, and good deeds Amen Selah”, and designs of a marriage canopy and a Sefer Torah. All is drawn in lead, in preparation for the embroidery. Wine stains left over from the Bris and age stains. Some threads frayed. Constructed of four strips of cloth sewn edge-to-edge. Fair-good condition.
