Letter from Rabbi Yehoshua Zelig Roch of Łomża - A short letter from Rabbi Yehoshua Zelig Ruch, one of the heads of the Lomza Yeshiva, to Rabbi Chaim Ozer of Vilna and the Vaad HaYeshivos. 1937. In his letter, he makes three important requests: 1. To inquire about the well-being of Rabbi Chaim Ozer of Vilna: ”I ask to be informed personally regarding the health of our master, Rabbi Chaim Ozer, may he live long, and also to convey to him my regards and wishes for a joyous holiday.” 2. He requests Sefarim from the Vaad HaYeshivos, primarily volumes of the Talmud Bavli, tractate Bava Kama, and the Rif and Rosh on Bava Kama. 3. He asks for financial support in honor of the approaching holiday. The letter was written on the eve of Sukkos. The letter is written on an official postcard of the sacred Lomza Yeshiva, with the name and address of the Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Yechiel Mordechai Gordon, the brother-in-law of Rabbi Yehoshua Zelig, inscribed in Latin script on the back. Rabbi Yehoshua Zelig Ruch, known as ”the Illui of Rakishok” [1880–1942], was Rosh Yeshiva of Lomza together with his brother-in-law, Rabbi Yechiel Mordechai Gordon. He was one of the great disciples of the Alter of Slabodka and introduced the study of Mussar in the Lithuanian yeshivas of Telz and Mir. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Eliezer Shulovitz, the founder and Rosh Yeshiva of Lomza. He was murdered in the Holocaust on the night after Yom Kippur, while still dressed in his kittel and tallis.
