In the Steipler’s stamp in this copy appears: “Yaakov Yisroel Kanievsky, author of Shaarei Tevunah” – this early stamp shows a different spelling of his last name than the one that later became established, and references his sefer Shaarei Tevunah (published in 1925), prior to the later publication of his famous work Kehillos Yaakov which began appearing in 1936. On the inside of the back cover, the Steipler artistically wrote the name of the Sefer Chavat Yair in scribe-style calligraphy, shrinking and then expanding over several lines. T he great Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel Kanievsky (1899–1985), the Kehillos Yaakov, one of the preeminent Torah leaders of his generation, revered for his holiness and prophetic spirit – “all that he spoke was fulfilled.” Brother-in-law of the Chazon Ish, he was named after the holy Admor Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel of Cherkassy, as his family were Chassidim of Hornosteipel. Author of Shaarei Tevunah, Kehillos Yaakov, and other sefarim. Rosh Yeshiva of Beit Yosef and President of the Chazon Ish Kollel in Bnei Brak. Known affectionately as “the Steipler, ” after his hometown. In his final years, he stood at the helm of the Torah community. His son, the great Gaon Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, succeeded him. Rabbi Yitzchak ben Rabbi Moshe Dov Perlov (1850–1902) – rabbinical judge in Vileika. Author of Erez BaLevanon – Vaya’ater Yitzchak (Vilna, 1899). He also published the Or HaYashar Siddur (Vilna, 1877), based on the Nusach used by his grandfather, the Admor Rabbi Shlomo Chaim Perlov of Koidanov. In the 1903 edition, he included his work Kuntres HaMinhagim – “All the customs throughout the year from my grandfather the Admor HaZaken of Koidanov.” Detached binding, worming, stains.
