Rabbi Yosef ben Eliyahu Chaim Konvitz (1878–1944) – known as the “Ilui of Kaushadary.” A student of the Slabodka Yeshiva, among the fourteen elite students sent by the Alter of Slabodka to establish the yeshiva in Slutsk. He married the daughter of the city’s rabbi, the Ridbaz, from whom he learned psak and rabbinic leadership. He served as a rabbi, darshan, dayan, and rosh yeshiva in several cities in Lithuania, in Safed, and in the United States. One of the founders of the Ezras Torah organization. He served as Vice President of the Union of Rabbis of the United States and Canada, and Honorary President of the Union. He was buried beside his father-in-law in the old Jewish cemetery in Safed. Author of Divrei Yosef, containing derashot, responsa, and Chidushim on Shas and the Poskim.
